Nepal end drought with 9th place finish

Jan 28, 2014 | Eddie Van Brooks |

Nepal finally brought an end to their win-drought defeating Division-III opponents Uganda by 160 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers at the Bay Oval 2 in Mount Maunganui in New Zealand on Tuesday.

Opting to bat first, Nepal were 240 all out where Prithu Baskota slammed a fluent half century before retiring hurt following collision with Sharad Vesawkar. Uganda in reply were bundled out for just 80 runs in 36.2 overs.

It was Uganda's second lowest total in the tournament after they were packed up for 61 against Namibia in the group stage.

Uganda were down and out when they lost their first five wickets for just 50 runs inside 24 overs with two wickets from Som Pal Kami, one from Basanta Regmi and two run outs destroying their top order.

Sagar Pun then picked up three more wickets and Shakti Gauchan polished off the tail as Uganda were humbled for their sixth successive match in the tournament. Richar Okia top scored for Uganda with 19 runs.

Earlier, Mahesh Chhetri and Pradeep Airee gave Nepal their biggest opening wicket partnership of the tournament sharing 33 runs in 7.3 overs. Pradeep hit a six and a four in his 32-ball 23 and his dismissal followed the wicket of Gyanendra Malla (eight).

Mahesh (19) shared another 24 runs with skipper Paras Khadka before he was run out. Paras shared 29 runs with Sharad and lost his wicket for 30 off 56 that included two boundaries. Prithu then went on to add 88-run for the fifth wicket with Sharad before colliding with his partner while scampering for a single.

Prithu smashed nine boundaries and a six in his 51-ball 59. Though details are yet to be received from New Zealand, Pritu's injury could be even dangerous as it comes at the same knee that kept him out of ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers

Sharad was soon dismissed for 41 off 69 with two boundaries, while Binod Bhandari was at his usual aggression making 35 from 21 with three sixes and two boundaries.
